A good day today. Had a nice trip out to an "away" football match near High Wycombe (which we won 4-2!). My friend who I go with smokes, but it doesn't bother me at all. I even don't mind him smoking in the car because I know how I used to hate it when I couldn't.
Got home, read some football news on my team's forum, went on Facebook for a while, had some tea with some wine, watched Match Of The Day, watched a film, went to bed. All very nice and relaxing.
It was mentioned the other day that weekends seem to be easier for me. It's true and I think it's because during the working week, I get home in the evening and it's kind of like a big crash. What I mean is, I've been working all day, being fully occupied, and suddenly I'm home and relaxing. For me, that's a trigger, i.e. to accompany the relaxation I should have a cigarette.
Whereas at the weekend, it's all pretty relaxing. Or at least, it's all pretty much at the same level throughout the day so there's no crash as such. I hope I'm making sense!

Hi Pete
Great effort in going to the football with your buddy who smokes!
I went to Australian football last Friday night. My team got walloped, but I did not smoke. I am now day 15.
It is the longest that I have not smoked for 20 years! I cannot believe it. I also cannot believe that I am a young Dad to two beautiful kids and my wife is due with another in just 10 weeks. So yeah, that is another reason why I must succeed this time. It is pretty ordinary running out of the labour ward to smoke. I am also a solicitor, so I don't need to tell you how bad I feel standing around the corner of the Court house to get a fix with the crooks, albeit a legal one.
I feel I am on the home stretch. Am using patches and gum when I get crazy. It is working.
So keep at it, I can't wait until I get to day 36. But you are providing me with a great deal of enthusiasm. I figure first milestone was 3 days. Second was 7. Third was 14 days. Next 1 is one month free. Then it will be 3 months, 12 months and then a bad dream. My main "themes" are responsibility to myself and others, and coming out of the cloudy smoke. So far so good. Weekends are my worst time. Had Indian food Saturday night and was dying for one after dinner, but stayed true.
I am extremely pleased with myself for that as I have always fallen over at 2 weeks before. Hey smoking is not so bad etc. Truth is, it is. It is very bad, and people who smoke should know better. I am starting to think I do.
Cheers
Steve
Hi Steve,
Sounds like you're doing brilliantly, much better than your football team!
My daughter's 22 now, but when she was small I smoked in the house. It wasn't such a big issue back then. She has asthma, and will have for the rest of her life. She has never blamed me but how do you think it makes me feel? I try not to think about it.
I'll bet your craving after your curry soon disappeared, but you did very well to resist. Be prepared for other moments like that and you'll do fine. I'm sure you know I've had some bad days recently, but if you can get through them, it makes you stronger.
I can't wait until you get to day 36 either, because that means I'll be at day 57!
We WILL do this!
Hey there both Pete and Steve,
I've also just made it to 15 days, woo hoo!!! This is also the longest that I have gone without becoming the closet smoker that I usually do and lying to everyone about it. Feeling pretty good although those cravings after food and especially whilst drinking are still THERE!!! (I really do hope that they disappear) I too am on the patches which I'm finding pretty good for me. When I have a few drinks I do pull out the nicorette gum to chew on which I find does help.
I have a few social functions that I am required to attend but I get a bit scared to go. I know that sounds stupid but I'm so worried that I'll go, have a few too many and crash tackle a passerby to steal a puff from their cigarette.
I'm still having a little trouble sleeping. Are you guys over that bit yet?
Pete, you're pretty brave being able to sit in a car with a smoker, I don't think I'm up to that yet.
Well guys, keep up the good work and I wish you all the best.
Cheers
Sue
Hey Sue,
Good to hear from you again, and that you're still with us! Keep up the good work, you're doing fantastically!
I wondered before about if the cravings ever go. I came to the conclusion that they must do, otherwise no-one would ever stop smoking. I certainly couldn't live the rest of my life without smoking if I felt like that all the time!
Now speaking from experience, I can tell you that they do get easier and become less frequent. I still get them every day, but they're much easier to manage than they were a couple of weeks ago. Also, as long as you're aware that you're going to get them, you can be more prepared for them.
I never had any trouble with sleeping. In fact (as I posted in an earlier blog) I've been sleeping much better. That's because I've stopped coughing, which I used to do a lot while trying to get to sleep. I guess we're all different and react in different ways. I'm pretty sure that Steve said he hadn't slept for a couple of weeks, so you're not alone!
Keep up the good work!
