Stop Smoking Day 35 - Friday February 15th 2008

Every morning, I used to have my breakfast (nothing much, just some cereal) and then have two cigarettes with my coffee. This was almost like a religion, even if I didn't really feel like having the second one, I still had to have it. It was as if something bad would happen if I didn't have it. How ridiculous is that!

Anyway, the reason I'm mentioning it is because I just realised this morning that I don't even think about those two cigarettes anymore! I think that's something of a breakthrough. Obviously I had to think about them to realise that I don't think about them, if you see what I mean, but you get the picture. Maybe things are looking up!

Hi Pete. Yeah, I would say it is a breakthrough for you. Recognizing old habits seems to signal a real growth away from smoking.

There are so many triggers that just jump up at me at off times, it makes me amazed at how ruthless this addiction is. For instance, I got into a big fight with my brother the other day, and after it was over I wanted a smoke so bad, more than any urge of the last month. Or for some reason after I have been in a shopping mall that is crowded I get a strong urge to light up as soon as I am outside.

In understanding and not giving in to these cravings, we build on the sobriety from smoking. And it reminds us to stay on guard for the next craving, wherever it may arise from.

And I have to say that just as you don't want to let those viewing your blog down by giving into the urge to smoke, I feel the same way. This is a support group of sorts and as your objective states that if you can help another person than it is worth it. Well, I have to tell you it has helped me and thanks for the effort and the "stick to it" attitude you have exhibited. It is appreciated by me and I am sure others checking in here watching your progress.

Keep up the good work!

Thanks srj, I'm glad this is helping you too, which, as you pointed out, was my original objective.

Mission accomplished, onwards and upwards!
